In order to find success in today’s society, many veterans are required to enhance their skills. As a result, further education is often the key to starting a second career. Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) is a free-of-charge program (funded by the U.S. Department of Education) that helps veterans, who have not completed a bachelor’s degree, to prepare for enrollment at the college of their choice.
Roosevelt University's VUB program has been in existence since 1995, and is the only one of its kind in the entire state of Illinois. RU VUB is committed to assisting veterans from all eras obtain the education that they deserve.
VUB primarily assists veterans by providing academic refresher courses. Participants can strengthen their writing, reading, math, and computer skills before they start college. The program also provides assistance in understanding the complexities of financing a college education. VUB’s primary mission is to provide veterans a unique pre-collegiate experience designed to remove apprehensions that some veterans, as non-traditional students, may have about entering postsecondary education.
Beyond the academic coursework and tutoring, VUB provides personalized counseling and guidance to help veterans enroll in — and successfully complete — the postsecondary academic program of their choice. Upon successful completion of the VUB program, veterans are not only familiar with the services and resources that would be available to them as college students, but, more importantly, they possess a renewed confidence in their academic abilities. Consequently, they are more likely to complete a program of higher education and benefit from its opportunities. Again, all VUB services are provided at no cost to veterans.
